Student
As a student I have changed in many ways. I am a stronger student then I was before. In the past I was a student who didn’t care and would goof off. When I felt like I should do some class work so the teacher would not be on my back I would find a person and copy their work. Since I have joined Gateway my attitude towards school as changed me as a student. I pay attention in class, I do my own work and I enjoy making sure I am the student I should have been in the past. In the past I thought school was just pointless. Since I had my baby I have realized that school is what will help provide income for my daughter to have the life she deserves.
Being a mom and a student I need to find all the extra time possible to get my work finished by going to school early. It is hard to do all my assignments at home because my daughter wants and needs my attention. She is unable to understand that mommy is trying to get an education to make our lives better. Time has become an issue between being a student, a mom and a teenager. This is a lesson that no school or class can teach me how to handle, but being a student has taught me how to organize my life to get everything I need to be completed done.
As a student, I feel my biggest accomplishment is the ability to multitask. For me this is a huge step forward as I am a single mom, a teenager and a student who never thought I would make it this far. As a person I am able to deal with life and as a student I am able to deal with assignments, tests, learning, lectures, and just being a mind absorbing machine because I know everything I am doing now will make life for my baby and me easier. I have had to learn how to do homework and have a baby sit beside me wanting my attention and screaming her head off. Before I was never able to do home work around anyone because I am very easily side tracked. I not only gained the ability to do more than one thing at the same time, but I have gained confidence as a person.
Being a student at Gateway has been a great experience for me with learning how to multitask, realizing how important education will be for my baby and me and being confident as a person. Being the perfect student is impossible and is even harder for a single mom, but with the support of friends, family and teachers I am able to be the best student I possibly can.
Reader
I have never been a very good reader. I felt that I stumbled over the words I read, which made me not confident. I had a hard time making out words. Now as a reader I feel more confident about my reading out loud. I have learned that I need my reading to flow as if I was talking, which has made me feel comfortable reading out loud.
One problem I still have in reading is comprehension. When I read I do not always understand everything I am reading. In most cases I have to read a paragraph twice to remember what I had just read. One way for me to comprehend what I am reading is if someone reads out loud to me. Then I am able to pay attention to the words and what is actually being said instead of trying to figure out the words instead of their meaning.
Since I have never really been big on reading I don’t have a favorite between fiction or non-fiction. I do enjoy a good fairy tale or even a real life story. In the fairy tales, I love the imagination the writer has and how he or she gives details. In real stories, I love the ones that you can relate to when you read them. Life is hard and it is nice to know that other people go through similar things. It is nice to know that I am not alone.
As a reader I have gained the skill of confidence as I have progressed in my reading. My ability of reading out loud has become easier, even though it is still not my strong point. I enjoy taking the time to try and understand what I am reading.
Writer
Before I joined Gateway my writing was not detailed. Everything I would write was straight to the point. Since I started Gateway I have been encouraged to add detail to my writings. I have seen by showing more information I have found that my papers make more sense. People reading my papers are able to understand why I wrote what I wrote because they have the information needed in the paper to come to a conclusion.
Over the past few months my papers have changed dramatically. At the beginning I would have a lot of corrections on my paper, told to use more detail in my writing and now that is all different. The main comment I get now is to cite my sources. This has built my confidence in my papers and makes me want to express more throughout my writing. I have been taught to write better and to express details into all my writings. I have been given the courage to not be afraid to add something to a paper because I feel it may be too much information. I have learned too much information does not exists because the more detail a person lays out on paper the better the reader is going to understand what is being said and why a certain conclusion has come about.
Writing has never come easy to me. I never enjoyed it and I never thought I could. As I sit here and write this paper I have realized over this semester I have done some of the best writing in school. I have never been given the encouragement to write like I have at Gateway. Now I have the skills taught to me and figured out a way to express my details in papers.
I have also learned that writing is essential in life. A person needs to understand how to express his or her feelings without causing issues in the work place, in life and in school. Writing also allows a person to be who he or she is with words, paper and a pen.
Mathematics
As a math student I have always been good at doing math. Math just comes natural to me and I have never really needed much help in this subject. I am usually the first one done and usually asked to help other students. Some other students have come to me for tutoring because I am good at explaining math. My attitude about math has been the same since I can remember. Since I am so good in math maybe I need to look at careers that need to be in this field.
Some math fields that I can look into is engineering, a math teacher or even a programmer. I have always thought of going into the medical field which math is used to some point, but science would be my downfall. All of these fields are good fields, but deciding if this is the right path for me is something that will need some thought.
Math is in everyone’s lives every day. Math consists of numbers and equations which is a day to day activity. Money is numbers, clocks are numbers, telephone have numbers, television has channels which consist of numbers and the car has a speedometer which is also made up of numbers. People do not realize that math is around them all the time and to be able to use these things they have to identify the main numbers of zero through nine. Once everyone gets the concept of math equals numbers than they can start putting equations together to make up another number or find a number. This is when math gets tricky and most people will get the concept of adding and subtracting, which is the basic concept to get through life. Now, by taking on different type of careers will determine how much math equations a person will need to know in life such as an engineer will need to know calculus type of equations while a programmer may need to know more number and letter type equations to get from point a to point b. Math will help everyone in life and all they have to do is take the time to understand the basics first.
Person
As I person I have changed in many ways. I have never really put anyone before me until I had my little girl. Before my life was just about what Ashley wanted and no one else mattered to me. I didn’t care if I hurt anyone. I just wanted to make myself happy. Once I had my little girl my views on my life had changed. I was not worried about myself anymore because I had a baby who depended on me to make the right choices and have our lives headed in the right direction. Things happen to people in their lives and it can change the way people look at themselves. This is what happened to me. I became a single teenage mom and the thought of doing something wrong scared me. I had to become a better person for my child no matter what it took. School became a priority; doing the right thing became important and being a good mom became a significant part of my life.
I was surprised when I had a discussion with my English teacher. She explained to me that she felt I had a bad attitude toward her in the beginning of the semester. She said that she thought that she was never going to get through to me. Until one day I wrote a paper on putting someone else before myself. In that paper I wrote about putting my little girl before myself. That’s when I realized that I’m not here for me, I’m here for Nichole. So I had to change my bad attitude and remember that I’m not in high school anymore. I had to grow up quickly and become the person I needed to be in school otherwise I would not become the person I need to be in life.
It is important to me that I am the person who is there for her child, one that can support her child without the help of others, and be the friend that people can count on in time of need. It is important that I have realized life does not revolve around me. It is important that I am able to balance my family, life and friends. Being the kind of person I want to be is going to take courage, wisdom and compassion that I can only learn from school, friends, family and deep within myself. I have grown over the past semester because I have realized I am who I am because of what I do.
